HollyShorts Film Festival Gets 4th Oscar Category!

As we get closer and closer to this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, the short lists for films that are expected to generate a lot of buzz are being compiled, festival runs are being organized, and the incredible talents that are contributing this medium are gearing up for or have already gone out for big media and festival tours. That’s nothing new for the HollyShorts Film Festival as it enters its 19th year. The festival has become the pinnacle for filmmakers working in the short film medium, and has consistently contributed to the Oscars with it’s three eligible categories: Best Short Film Grand Prize, Best Short Animation and Best Short Live Action. HollyShorts has now been granted an incredible opportunity to generate more spotlight on short films, as it’s been announced that the festival can now feature films that can qualify for the Academy Awards with one additional category: Best Documentary, Short Subject.

This is incredible news for all involved. From the Academy Awards show itself to the ever-growing HollyShorts Film Festival, and especially to the filmmakers themselves, who now have even more of an impact on the biggest awards show in filmmaking.

While the category itself has been around for quite some time and has featured many participants of the HollyShorts Film Festival, this year, their entry into the Festival can allow them to join the ranks of some incredibly acclaimed film. Winners will join Riz Ahmed’s The Long Goodbye, who won their first Academy Award after their entry at HollyShorts, as well as documentary filmmakers like Ben Proudfoot, who has also won an award for their incredible documentary film The Queen of Basketball, which premiered at HollyShorts.

Congratulations to HollyShorts for being able to do even more for the incredible filmmakers that submit and join the illustrious list of HollyShorts alums, and congratulations to the Academy for allowing this influential festival to do even more to contribute to the storied history of cinema.

And of course, congratulations to the filmmakers, who now have even more opportunity to receive recognition for their hard work at the Academy Awards.

The now-eligible films, along with hundreds of other amazing entries, will be shown at this year’s 19th annual HollyShorts Film Festival, which will take place in Hollywood from August 10th to August 20th.
