Were they any challenges in making this project?
There really weren’t! We went into making this just for us, for the experience… so there were no expectations placed on it, which took all the pressure off. The only real issue we ran into was that there was no snow for the sledding scene! But we improvised and I think the scene works even better now.
Is there any type of message or emotion that you hope the viewer takes away from watching this film?
I think any conversation about mental health is a good conversation to have, so if the movie sparks one for the viewer we’re happy! Acknowledging the weight that teenagers often carry for their parents is important… Processing grief in families after loss… It’s all worthy of conversation.
How does it feel to be able to screen the film at HollyShorts?
We’re absolutely thrilled!
What inspired you to start making films?
Regardless of what kind of artist you are, we are all storytellers in our own right. I come to directing as an actor. When you’re an actor, you often have to wait for “permission” to act—to be chosen—which can be really frustrating and somewhat soul crushing. It has been so liberating to turn the tables and create opportunity for myself, and now for my daughter who is just starting her career.
What’s on the horizon for you?
I just locked my 4th feature—MAGIC HOUR—starring Daveed Diggs and myself, and I am so excited to share it with the world!
