Etzu Shaw’s short film 29 Hour Famine follows the story of Jenny, a stubbornly headstrong teen, organizing her church youth group’s annual fasting event with unusual and off-putting intensity. Were there any challenges in making this project?
I was very lucky to have a great team of people helping with this project, so in general the biggest challenges were creative – especially in post-production where we had to make a lot of hard choices in order to best serve the story and pacing. The film is better for it, but there’s definitely a director’s cut somewhere with about twice the amount of dialogue just for my own entertainment.
Is there any type of message or emotion that you hope the viewer takes away from watching this film?
As much as you might try to resist, at some point you gotta quench the thirst. Food is a basic need after all.
How does it feel to be able to screen the film at HollyShorts?
It’s amazing to be a part of this festival alongside so many other incredible shorts, and to get to screen the film at the TCL Chinese Theater. Super grateful to be given this opportunity.
What inspired you to start making films?
Basically a few years ago I took an introductory class in the evenings after work and things got out of control.
What’s on the horizon for you?
A lot of soul-searching probably, but I am also developing two features, another Asian-American centered comedy and a psychological thriller.
