5 Questions with “A Goal to Dream” Producer, Luca Amadessi

A Goal to Dream focuses on a group of girls from remote areas of northern Pakistan coming together to form a soccer team and prove that sport can be a powerful tool to break down gender barriers and bring about great change in society.

Were there any challenges in making this project?

We faced many challenges, especially against local people who were not in favour of the project, sometimes directly the families of the girls. Also, the principal of the school hasn’t allowed the girls to travel for a football tournament at the very beginning. Anyway, the resilience of the girls was stronger than any hurdle.

Is there any type of message or emotion that you hope the viewer takes away from watching this film?

We want to inspire people, especially girls and women all over the world, that someone else is facing the very same problems right now. The process of changing is ongoing and unstoppable, we just want to be a catalyst giving voice to those who never had.

How does it feel to be able to screen the film at HollyShorts?

We feel very excited and honoured. It’s something we were not expecting, at all: the idea to share the girls’ stories in US, could be a starting point to put a lens on the importance of sports as a tool for development.

What inspired you to start making films?

Getting inspired by documentaries and movies about unbelievable and touching stories. We wanted to find a story that was worth sharing to inspire other people and make a difference at the local level. When we met the girls, started to interview each one of them, we found incredible stories and great desires for the fulfilment of their lives.

What’s on the horizon for you?

We are still running the project to make it bigger, involving more girls and trying to upgrade it to a political level in order to recreate the same format in other remote areas, creating a stronger network to make even a bigger impact in the whole Pakistan. We strongly believe that sports “can change life” and it helps to develop and generate changes all over the world.
