HollyShorts Comedy Film Festival Feature: Why Do You Hate Me?

Chelsea Garcia Collazo’s hysterical web series sees herself as the star, writer and director, bringing her vision to life as a version of herself. Garcia plays Chelsea, a woman with ambition, following her dream in the best way she knows how: by trying to take shortcuts with ridiculous ideas. In the pilot episode, Chelsea decides that she wants to be a model, something her best friend Raquel (Raquel Undheim) is skeptical about, and brother Richard (Ryan Quigley) is downright mocking of. But this doesn’t stop Chelsea from figuring out exactly what to do, realizing that when models want to up their game, they find a much older man to take care of them, buy them things and spend their time with as a status symbol. Despite putting the cart before the horse a bit, Chelsea does just that, finding the significantly older Gary (John Sangiorgio) to be her sugar daddy, to limited and fleeting success.

The story of a woman in New York with big aspirations is nothing new, but Garcia manages to put a unique spin on it as the reckless, ridiculous Chelsea. Forcing her friends and family to deal with her hijinks, she plays the perfect driving force to silly but hilarious stories in quick succession, a terrific formula for the medium of short form web series. The rest of the cast are great foils, putting varying degrees of cold water on Chelsea’s outlandish schemes, but it’s Garcia who shows why she’s the center of attention and the driving force behind the project.

It’s no wonder that as an entrant to the 10th Annual HollyShorts Comedy Film Festival, Why Do You Hate Me? took home a win in the Best Web Series category. Be sure to give the first episode a look when possible, and look out for more on the way.
