Over the weekend, HollyShorts held the 10th Annual HollyShorts Comedy Film Festival in Los Angeles, at Glendale’s LOOK! Dine-In Cinemas. With dozens of films presented from a plethora of incredible filmmakers, it was an incredibly successful event. On the final day of the festival, the best of the best were decided upon, with the announcement made shortly after. A big congratulations to everyone who was able to participate in the festival, and a well-deserved round of applause to all of the winners of this year’s festivities! The list of winners will be down below!
Best Alternative Comedy – Joey Brooks’ The Application is a gorgeous film about a decision that spirals out of control, leading to a butterfly effect with consequences that couldn’t be foreseen.
Best Cringe – Luke Howe’s Bad Fences takes the idea of division in a literal and metaphorical sense as two neighbors have it out over a property dispute.
Best Dark Comedy – The Trophy King by Tighe Boudreaux Kellner is an absolutely wild film about a very poorly planned robbery of a trophy shop that the perpetrator of the robbery works at, making it a hilarious comedy of errors.
Best Feature Length Screenplay – Fiancé Navidad by Rosa Costanza is an excellent comedy feature script that is so well deserving of the spotlight being put on this script.
Best Horror Comedy – Adam Murray’s The Traveler and the Troll puts a new spin on the riddles three of the bridge troll, bringing some great humor to somethings that may feel kind of familiar.
Best Midnight – Juice Cleanse, a film by Will Reiland, is a wild film that sees a double-divorcee trying to get things back on track, when a new cleanse throws everything for a loop.
Best Of Fest – Amber Schaefer’s Doctor Death Grip is an fascinating piece about a woman, her six fingered boyfriend, his porn addiction and the essay that explosed it all.
Best Rom-Com – Jasia Ka’s queer romance about two women who find each other after finding out the same guy was cheating on them with each other is silly and a beautiful love story that is sure to pull at the heartstrings and leave everyone satisfied.
Best Short Screenplay – I’m Sorry I Had To Do This To You, by Doran Seff. This comedic short really seemed to impress the panel, as it was one of two accepted screenplays for Seff, whose work is sure to be seen more often in the future.
Best Spoof – Fireflies In The Dusk is Jonathan Hammond’s extremely silly time-hopping short that sees unlikely lovers find each other thanks to a magical desk that connects two different time periods.
Best Student – FCBK is a hard-hitting, powerful and darkly comedic short about a new hire being trained by the best medical assistant at an abortion clinic is a strong contender for favorite of the festival, even if it didn’t quite take home the award. This Kanani Koster film is just a gut punch, in a really great way.
Best TV – Drew Denny’s Wander Women is a wonderful piece that sees two women who have been in a doomsday cult, removed from that isolated community and attempting to find shelter and solace in Los Angeles.
Best TV Pilot Screenplay – Tricia Fukuhara and Henry Alexander Kelly deliver the screenplay for this semi-autobiographical pilot that sees Alice and Marcos, aimless and immature best friends in their mid-30s looking to grow up while living in Los Angeles.
Best Web Series – Why Do You Hate Me?, a series by Chelsea Garcia Collazo that focuses on a young woman who decides that she wants to be a model, making some questionable decisions to each her goal.
Honorable Mention – Jake Watchel’s The Sentry gets an honorable mention here, with the tale of a man haunting the super spy that killed him is an emotional and gratifying film to experience.
